My interest in fine sporting arms grew from using them. Hunting in North America, South America, Europe, and Africa taught me to pay attention to how a gun carries and works, beyond its finish.

Over the years, I’ve handled, owned, hunted with, and evaluated a wide range of sporting arms—from practical working guns to highly finished examples by leading makers. I look closely at condition and mechanical soundness, and I care about how an arm holds up in use. I am careful about what experience alone can and cannot establish.

In 2023, my longtime friend Scott Gallivan and I took the helm of Healing Waters Lodge ↗ in Montana’s Ruby Valley. Our shared love of the outdoors and personal approach to hospitality are central to the lodge’s story.

A Practical Perspective

Craftsmanship and Use

I describe condition conservatively, and I consider craftsmanship and function together. Fine finish cannot answer a practical question about how an arm works.

Known History, Clearly Told

An Honest Account of History

When historical information or provenance is known, I share it accurately and without embellishment. I provide relevant documentation when it is available.

Where the records leave a gap, I say so. I do not fill it with a story.
